Building a Permanent Home for Care: The Americana Health Center Expansion

News

For nearly two decades, Family Health Centers–Americana has provided critical medical, behavioral health, and support services to Louisville’s refugee and immigrant communities from a temporary modular clinic behind the Americana World Community Center (AWCC). While the care delivered inside has always been high quality, the space itself—just over 3,000 square feet—was never intended to meet the long-term needs of a rapidly growing population. Today, thanks to strong public investment and broad community support, that is changing.

The Americana Health Center expansion will renovate nearly 10,000 square feet across three floors of AWCC’s South Wing, more than doubling the size of the clinic and creating a permanent, fully accessible home for care. The project will expand clinical and behavioral health exam rooms, add an elevator and ADA-accessible features, and fully integrate primary care, behavioral health, Survivors of Torture Services, pharmacy and support programs within AWCC’s campus. The renovation will also modernize shared space for AWCC programs, strengthening the holistic, one-stop model that has long defined the partnership.

The project has been fully funded through a combination of federal, local, philanthropic, organizational, and community support, beginning with a $2 million House Community Funding Projects appropriation in FY 2023 and concluding with an $800,000 Louisville Metro Council investment approved in December. Construction bids open in early 2026, with substantial completion anticipated by March 2027 and the expanded clinic fully operational in mid-2027.

Together, Family Health Centers and Americana World Community Center are transforming temporary space into lasting infrastructure—ensuring Louisville’s newest neighbors are welcomed with dignity, safety, and high-quality care for years to come.
