Family Health Centers Transforms West Market Location Into Behavioral Health Care Hub For West End

Press Release

(Louisville, KY, November 3, 2022) Louisville-based Family Health Centers (FHC) is formally announcing the transition of its West Market location from a primary healthcare site to a Behavioral Health Care hub for the organization. FHC-West Market Counseling Center, located at 2500 West Market Street on the border of Portland and Russell neighborhoods, is now exclusively providing an array of behavioral health services to anyone in need of care.

The 5,425-square-foot building was donated to the Family Health Centers by KentuckyOne Health in November 2017 to avoid closing the primary care site. Since then, FHC has operated the West Market Health Center as an adult primary care site. With the greatly increased demand for behavioral health services during and after the pandemic, FHC decided to dedicate the West Market Health Center to the provision of behavioral health services.

“Our goal for this location is to provide the communities in medically underserved areas with the most needed health services, and that includes behavioral health,” states Dr. Bart Irwin, CEO of Family Health Centers. “Following hypertension and diabetes, the most diagnosed conditions for our patients are anxiety and depression. Transitioning FHC-West Market expands our capacity to provide services like counseling and medication management during a time when we are seeing significant and sustained levels of these conditions.”  Former primary care patients of West Market can access adult primary care, dental services, on-site pharmacy, and additional services at the FHC-Portland location one mile north of West Market.

FHC offers integrated behavioral health services at six other primary care locations, however, the needs at any particular site can vary. As the Behavioral Health Hub staff coordinate care and fill in the gaps for patients at the other six FHC sites, while providing expanded services that might not be available at all locations. “We added two full-time psychiatric nurse practitioners here at West Market, which tripled our capacity,” says Samantha Davis, LCSW Director of Behavioral Health Services at FHC. “Location is crucial when thinking about accessibility. A larger behavioral health presence in the West End makes a difference.”
