Stay Safe During Flood Cleanup: Make Sure Your Tetanus Shot Is Up to Date

News | Press Release

In the wake of recent flooding throughout our city, Family Health Centers is urging residents and volunteers engaged in cleanup efforts to safeguard their health by ensuring their tetanus vaccinations are up to date.

Floodwaters often contain hidden dangers, such as sharp metal, glass, or wood, as well as bacteria from sewage, animal waste, and soil. These hazards increase the risk of injury and of developing tetanus, a potentially life-threatening infection caused by bacteria that enters the body through cuts or puncture wounds.

“Tetanus is a serious illness, yet it is entirely preventable through vaccination,” stated Dr. Bart Irwin, Chief Executive Officer at Family Health Centers. “If you are assisting with cleanup after a flood, particularly in areas with standing water and debris, make sure your tetanus shot is current. It’s an easy way to protect yourself while supporting your community.”

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Adults should get a tetanus booster every 10 years.
  • You may need one immediately if you’re injured and haven’t had a booster in the past 5 years.
  • Tetanus shots are safe, quick, and widely available.
  • Family Health Centers offers tetanus vaccines at all primary care locations and Immediate Care centers throughout Louisville. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Protect yourself while helping others. Stay safe. Stay vaccinated.
